Step 2.

Using the heavy duty scissors, have an adult cut the top off of a paper cup, leave about 2 inches on the bottom of the cup.

Step 3.

Glue a Wooden Craft Stick to the side of the paper cup as shown.

Step 4.

Continue gluing Craft Sticks around the cup. The number of Craft Sticks that fit around the cup will vary depending on the size of the cup. You will need an odd number of Craft Sticks around the cup in order for the weaving to be successful. You might need to adjust the spacing between the Craft Sticks so that you can fit an odd number. In our example, we used 17 Craft Sticks.

Step 5.

Paint the outside of your basket and let it dry.

Step 6.

Pick a color of Friendship Thread Sailor Cord that you want to use. Tie an end around one of the Wooden Craft Sticks, pressing the cord down, until it touches the paper cup.

Step 7.

Start weaving the cord around the Craft Sticks. To do this, start with the Sailor Cord behind one stick, and then pull it around the front of the second stick. Bring the Cord behind the third stick and continue this pattern of "over, under, over, under."

Step 8.

Continue this pattern around the basket until you are almost out of the Cord. As you go around the basket, you will see the woven pattern start to take place.

Step 9.

When you have about 3 inches of Cord left, pick another color of Cord. Tie the ends together with a small knot and keep weaving. When you start to weave in the knot, do your best to tuck the pieces of the knot behind one of the Craft Sticks. Continue weaving and adding the other colors of Cord.

Step 10.

When you are ready to end the weaving, cut off any extra Cord. Glue the end of the cord in place, to keep the weaving from coming undone.

Step 11.

Your basket is complete. Use it to hold pencils or flowers crafts. It makes a great gift for a teacher or parent!

Step 2. / Paso 2.

Start by lightly drawing a design on a piece of card stock. A simple design will work the best. Avoid creating a design that has lots of little details, it will be difficult to cover all the details with the thread. We started by drawing a simple fish shape.

Step 3. / Paso 3.

Run a thin line of glue along the pencil outline.

Step 4. / Paso 4.

Starting with the loose end of your Friendship Thread, press it gently into the glue. The Thread will stick to the glue.

Step 5. / Paso 5.

Continue pressing the thread into the glue. We outlined the whole fish with the red Friendship Thread and then cut the Thread when complete.

Step 6. / Paso 6.

Run a small amount of glue along the top of the fish, under the top fin. Cut a small piece of red Friendship Thread and place on the glue to separate the top of the fish from the fin.

Step 7. / Paso 7.

Place a small dot of glue where the eye should go. Cut a small piece of green Friendship Thread. Using both fingers, add the Friendship Thread to the glue and wrap it around to create a spiral for the eye.

Step 8. / Paso 8.

Add Glue to the inside of the tail. Place green Friendship Thread in the glue and press back and forth, in the glue to fill in the tail, as shown.

Step 9. / Paso 9.

To make waves, first glue some pieces of blue Friendship Thread along the bottom in straight lines. Next, add curvy lines with the glue and gently press the Friendship Thread into the glue. It helps to use both fingers to guide the Thread into the glue so that the Friendship Thread stays curvy.

Step 10. / Paso 10.

Add different colors of Friendship Thread to finish your bookmark. Add straight lines and curvy lines to make the design on your bookmark more interesting.

This project was inspired by the Latin American art of “yarn painting”. Yarn painting is traditionally done, by adding a special wax to a flat, wood surface. Then yarn is pressed into the wax, similar to how we pressed the Friendship Thread into the glue for our project. The yarn paintings are extremely colorful and showcase designs that are common in Mexico, especially images of birds and fish. The majority of yarn paintings are created by artisans of the Huichol people, ancestors of Aztecs.  Pair this craft with a cultural lesson on the Aztec people and yarn paintings.

Step 3.

Clip knot under clipboard to secure while crafting. Separate strands out, arranging them in the order in which you want your colors to appear. To make the diagonal knot pattern, you will start from left to right and label the strands 1 (pink), strand 2 (orange), strand 3 (yellow), strand 4 (green), strand 5 (blue).
